This homemade peanut butter is creamy and smooth, perfectly spreadable, spoonable and salty with a hint of sweet. Super easy and fun to make!
Homemade peanut butter is so easy to make and so tasty you’ll want to make it yourself all the time from now on.
You might be wondering why you would make your own peanut butter when you can easily buy it. Well…. it’s super easy, fun and uniquely delicious!
I buy peanut butter all the time, we go through tons of the stuff in my house, but this homemade version is still something special.
And when you make something from scratch, that yes, you could easily buy, there’s an extra sense of pride about it.
This homemade peanut butter is a super simple recipe containing just 3-ingredients. And while I say ‘just’ maybe you’re thinking: ‘why so many…. it’s peanuts and….?’ Well, it’s peanuts, and a little oil to make it a bit smoother, and a bit of (optional) sweetener to balance the salty with a little sweet.
And the awesome thing about it is that it’s super versatile. Want to make a chunky version? You can do it. Want it a little sweeter or saltier? Easily done.
And once you get started on making your own homemade nut butters there’ll be no stopping you! Check out our homemade almond butter, cashew butter and coconut butter.
How To Make Homemade Peanut Butter
Full measurements and instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the post. This is just a summary to go along with the process photos.
- Add roasted salted peanuts to the food processor and process. It will start off crumbly and then will gradually form clumps and start to stick to the sides.
- Stop the machine, scrape down the sides and then start up again and add in a little oil while the machine is running.
- Keep processing until it turns into a smooth peanut butter.
Ingredient Notes
Roasted Salted Peanuts: This is the easiest way to get the most delicious peanut butter. If your peanuts are unsalted, then you will need to add in some salt. However, the peanuts must be roasted.
Peanut Oil: We used a little peanut oil for obvious reasons! However, you can use any vegetable oil or olive oil instead. You can also omit the oil altogether, but I prefer to use a little oil as it does seem to make it a little easier/quicker to make.
Maple Syrup: We used a small amount of maple syrup to just balance those salty flavors a little. The end result is not sweet at all, it’s just perfect. You can swap this out for agave nectar or another syrup of your choice. Alternatively you can use regular granulated sugar. Just make sure you let it dissolve properly into the peanut butter so that you aren’t left with crunchy pieces of sugar in your peanut butter.
Recipe Tips
Getting It Smooth: If your food processor isn’t getting the peanut butter smooth enough for your liking, you can add an optional extra step which is to place it into the blender for a final blend right at the end, just to get it nicely smooth.
Make It Chunky: If you want a crunchy version of peanut butter, then follow the recipe as usual, but stir in a quarter cup of crushed peanuts at the end.
Storing and Freezing
Keep it stored in a glass jar in the fridge where it will stay good for a couple of weeks. It is also freezer friendly if you’d like to freeze some of it for later use.

Homemade Peanut Butter
Ingredients
- 2 cups Roasted Salted Peanuts (300g)
- 1 Tablespoon Peanut Oil
- 1 Tablespoon Maple Syrup Optional
Instructions
- Add the peanuts to the food processor and process. It will start off crumbly and then will gradually form clumps and start to stick to the sides.
- Stop the machine, scrape down the sides and then start up again and add in the peanut oil while the machine is running.
- Keep processing until it turns into a smooth peanut butter. Add maple syrup and process again until well mixed.
Notes
- I used peanut oil (for obvious matching reasons) but using another oil will also work perfectly fine. The oil is also actually optional. This peanut butter can be made without any added oil, but I do find that it comes together a little quicker with a little added oil.
- Maple syrup is optional but does tend to balance the flavors nicely. You can substitute any other syrup or even granulated sugar, but make sure it’s processed in properly or your peanut butter will be grainy.
- This recipe makes around 1 and ½ cups of peanut butter.
- This recipe was first published in January 2018.

Trying to save money, so decided to make my own. Fantastic! Don’t know why I waited so long. I paid £1.60 for a 200g bag of raw peanuts, roasted them, then whizzed it up in my mini chopper, no salt and no sugar, just like in my shop bought jar. Delicious.

Awesome! So glad you enjoyed it Tina, thanks for the great review!

Absolutely delicious and so easy to make. No more shop brought for me. Yummy
Gail says
I made this but was too impatient to get it to blend more smoothly – it seemed to stay separate tiny crumbs for ever and I added in oil (without measuring – stupid!) so while it tastes great, it is way too runny, even though it is being stored in the fridge. Do you have any ideas on how I can use it in some recipes?
BTW, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR WINS! I voted for you in the best videos section.
Alison Andrews says
Hi Gail! Thank you so much and thanks for voting! We are thrilled to win in two categories again this year! It does take some patience to make homemade nut butters, it seems like it will never become a nut butter but then suddenly it does! Anyway even if it is too runny it will still be totally great in smoothies, our chocolate peanut butter smoothie and peanut butter banana smoothie would both work great for this.

This is wonderful. I used a combination of salted roasted in the shell and dry roasted peanuts and olive oil since I didn’t have peanut oil. I will never buy peanut butter again
Alison Andrews says
Yay! Thanks so much for posting Bobbi! 🙂

Homemade is always the best!

I agree! In my opinion, most things are better homemade! Most bread at the store is vegan, but I so prefer to make my own. In fact, I make a lot of my food from scratch, rather than buy it pre-made at the store. I have made peanut butter lots and lots of times, but I usually use roasted, unsalted peanuts. Then I just add some salt, once processed. I really don’t think the oil is necessary, it always gets completely smooth and creamy without it in my food processor. Though, I think I will try it sometime with a little sweetener as you suggested, to see how it tastes.
Alison Andrews says
Definitely better homemade! Thanks for sharing your peanut butter method too. 🙂

I totally agree with you Alison. Whilst you can buy almost everything vegan there is nothing like the home made version. I notice quite a difference in my own almond milk to store bought. Besides, homemade is fresher and you know EXACTLY what’s in it!!!. Love your recipes, keep them coming. Happy 2018
Alison Andrews says
Yes definitely! Nothing like homemade! Thanks for posting Lynne and happy 2018 to you too! 🙂
